Dealing with Hip Pain

Frequently Asked Questions

Hip pain is one of the most prevalent health complaints in the world. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), approximately 1 in 5 adults experience hip pain at some point in their lives. Hip pain can affect anyone, regardless of age, sex, or physical activity level.

Hip pain can be categorised into several types, each with its unique characteristics and causes.

  • Osteoarthritis: This is the most common type of hip pain, accounting for approximately 70% of all hip pain cases. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that is the inflammation of the hip joint including cartilage, capsule and other structures within the hip. It is often treatable with physiotherapy.
  • Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS): This type of hip pain is caused by inflammation of the tendons that attach to the greater trochanter, a bony bump on the outside of the hip. GTPS can cause sharp, stabbing, or aching pain that radiates down the thigh.
  • Groin Pain: Groin pain is a common type of hip pain that affects the muscles and tendons in the groin area. It can cause sharp, stabbing, or aching pain that radiates to the inner thigh. Groin pain can affect athletes as well as the general population.
  • Gluteal Tendinopathy: Gluteal tendinopathy is a condition that affects the tendons in the buttock muscles. It can cause sharp, stabbing, or aching pain that radiates down the leg.
  • Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) Pain: SIJ pain is caused by inflammation of the joint that connects the sacrum and ilium bones in the pelvis. SIJ pain can cause sharp, stabbing, or aching pain that radiates to the lower back.
  • Bursitis: Bursitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joints and reduce friction. Bursitis can cause sharp, stabbing, or aching pain that radiates to the surrounding area.
  • Femoro-Acetabular Impingement (FAI): FAI is a condition that causes the femoral head to rub against the acetabulum, leading to pain and limited mobility.
  • Labral Tear: A labral tear is a tear in the cartilage that surrounds the hip joint. It can cause sharp, stabbing, or aching pain that radiates to the surrounding area.
  • Muscle Tears: Muscle tears can cause sharp, stabbing, or aching pain that radiates to the surrounding area.

The healing timeframe for hip pain varies widely depending on the underlying cause and individual factors. In some cases, hip pain may resolve on its own within a few days or weeks, while in other cases, it may take months or even years to fully recover.

The hip and pelvis is a very complex area of the body, pain around the hip and pelvis area can be caused by many different things. It is important to see a Physiotherapist or a doctor if you are experiencing hip pain. A proper initial diagnosis is very important in beginning your journey to improvement.

Physiotherapy is a highly effective treatment option for hip pain. Our expert physiotherapists use a variety of techniques to address hip pain, including:

  • Manual Therapy: Our physiotherapists use gentle, non-invasive techniques to relax tense muscles, improve joint mobility, and reduce pain.
  • Exercise: Regular exercise is essential for maintaining strong hip muscles and improving overall spinal health. Our physiotherapists create customised exercise programs to help you build strength, flexibility, and endurance.
  • Education: We educate our patients on proper lifting techniques, posture, and body mechanics to prevent future hip pain episodes.
  • Modalities: We use a variety of modalities, including heat, cold, and supporting taping or braces to reduce pain and inflammation.
