Physiotherapy and Shoulder Pain

What are the most common shoulder injuries?

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint, providing stability and mobility. A rotator cuff tear occurs when one or more of these muscles or tendons become torn or ruptured. This can happen due to a sudden injury, such as a fall or a blow to the shoulder, or due to gradual wear and tear over time.

Symptoms of a rotator cuff tear include:

  • Pain and weakness in the shoulder
  • Inability to lift the arm
  • A tearing or snapping sensation at the time of injury

Bursitis is a condition in which the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions the shoulder joint, becomes inflamed. This can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in the shoulder. Bursitis can be caused by repetitive motions, such as throwing or lifting, or by sudden trauma, such as a fall.

Symptoms of bursitis include:

  • Pain and swelling in the shoulder
  • Limited range of motion
  • Inability to lift the arm

Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendons and ligaments around the shoulder joint become compressed or pinched as they pass through a narrow space. This can cause pain, inflammation, and limited mobility in the shoulder. Impingement can be caused by repetitive motions, such as throwing or lifting, or by sudden trauma.

Symptoms of shoulder impingement include:

  • Pain and stiffness in the shoulder
  • Inability to lift the arm
  • A catching or grinding sensation in the shoulder

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones in the shoulder joint wears away, leading to bone-on-bone contact and joint pain. Risk factors for developing osteoarthritis include:

  • Age
  • Trauma or previous injuries
  • Genetic predisposition

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Limited range of motion
  • Swelling and inflammation

Tendinopathy is a condition in which the tendons around the shoulder joint become irritated and inflamed. This can cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility in the shoulder. Tendinopathy can be caused by repetitive motions, such as throwing or lifting, or by sudden trauma.

Symptoms of tendinopathy include:

  • Pain and stiffness in the shoulder
  • Inability to lift the arm
  • A grinding or snapping sensation in the shoulder

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition in which the shoulder joint becomes stiff and painful, limiting movement and range of motion. The exact cause of frozen shoulder is not known, but it is thought to be related to inflammation and scarring of the joint capsule.

Symptoms of frozen shoulder include:

  • Severe stiffness and pain in the shoulder
  • Limited range of motion
  • Gradual onset of symptoms over weeks or months

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the humerus bone (upper arm bone) becomes partially or completely displaced from the glenoid cavity (shoulder socket). This can happen due to sudden trauma, such as a fall or a blow to the shoulder, or due to repetitive motions, such as throwing.

Symptoms of a dislocation include:

  • Severe pain and swelling in the shoulder
  • Inability to lift the arm
  • Deformity or instability in the shoulder

Fractures are breaks in the bone that can occur due to trauma or sudden force. In the shoulder, fractures can affect the humerus, scapula, or clavicle bones.

Symptoms of a fracture include:

  • Severe pain and swelling in the shoulder
  • Inability to lift the arm
  • Deformity or instability in the shoulder

The AC joint is located at the top of the shoulder, where the clavicle (collarbone) meets the acromion (shoulder blade). A sprain of the AC joint occurs when the ligaments that hold the joint together become stretched or torn.

Symptoms of an AC joint sprain include:

  • Pain and swelling at the top of the shoulder
  • Limited range of motion
  • Inability to lift the arm
